Gynecology

Uterine fibroids

Medical and surgical care for fibroids, including uterus-preserving surgery.

What it is

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the womb muscle. They can cause heavy periods, pain, pressure and fertility problems.

Who it's for

Women with symptomatic fibroids or fibroids found on ultrasound.

What to expect

  • Ultrasound or MRI to map the fibroids
  • Discussion of watchful waiting, medicines and surgery
  • Myomectomy (open or laparoscopic) to keep the womb, or hysterectomy when appropriate

Common questions

Can fibroids come back after surgery?
New fibroids can grow after myomectomy. Your gynecologist will discuss follow-up.
