Gynecologic Oncology
Colposcopy and precancer treatment
Detailed examination of the cervix and treatment of precancerous changes.
What it is
Colposcopy uses a magnifying instrument to examine the cervix closely. Abnormal areas can be sampled and treated with thermal ablation, cryotherapy or LEEP.
Who it's for
Women with an abnormal screening result.
What to expect
- An outpatient procedure similar to a screening test
- Local anesthetic for treatment where needed
- Follow-up testing to make sure the changes are gone
Common questions
Will treatment affect future pregnancies?
Most treatments have little effect. LEEP can slightly raise the risk of preterm birth; we will discuss this with you.
