Why it matters
Untreated infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea can damage the fallopian tubes and cause infertility or ectopic pregnancy. Syphilis and HIV can pass to a baby during pregnancy.
Protect yourself
- Use condoms correctly every time
- Get tested with a new partner
- Get vaccinated against hepatitis B and HPV where available
Testing in pregnancy
All pregnant women are offered tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B. Treatment protects your baby.
If you are treated
Your partner needs treatment too, or the infection may come back. Avoid sex until you both finish treatment.
