What it is
Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is heavy bleeding after birth, most often in the first 24 hours. It can become life-threatening within minutes.
Warning signs
- Soaking a pad in less than an hour
- Passing large clots
- Feeling faint, dizzy or very weak
- A fast heartbeat or cold, pale skin
Why facility birth matters
In a hospital, staff give medicine to help the womb contract straight after birth, watch bleeding closely and can give fluids, blood and emergency treatment if needed.
Reduce your risk
- Attend antenatal care and treat anemia
- Plan to give birth in a health facility
- Tell staff if you bled heavily in a previous birth
