Baby blues or depression?
Many mothers feel tearful in the first two weeks after birth. If low mood, anxiety or loss of interest lasts longer than two weeks, it may be depression.
Signs to share with your doctor
- Feeling sad, empty or hopeless most days
- Losing interest in things you used to enjoy
- Severe anxiety or panic
- Trouble sleeping even when the baby sleeps
- Thoughts of harming yourself or your baby — seek help immediately
What helps
Rest, practical help at home and talking to someone you trust. Counselling and, when needed, medicines that are safe in breastfeeding can help.
Family matters
Partners and relatives can help by sharing night feeds and household work and by encouraging the mother to seek care.
