What HPV is
Human papillomavirus is a very common virus passed through intimate skin contact. Most infections clear on their own, but some persist and can lead to cervical cancer years later.
Who should be vaccinated
Ethiopia's national programme vaccinates girls aged around 9 to 14. The vaccine works best when given before a girl could be exposed to HPV.
Is it safe?
Yes. HPV vaccines have been given to hundreds of millions of people worldwide. The most common side effect is a sore arm for a day or two. The vaccine does not affect future fertility.
Vaccination and screening together
Vaccinated girls still need cervical screening when they are older, because the vaccine does not protect against every type of HPV.
