When to start

Come for your first visit as soon as you know you are pregnant, ideally before 12 weeks. The World Health Organization recommends at least eight antenatal contacts during pregnancy.

At your first visit

  • Your health history and any previous pregnancies
  • Blood pressure, weight and a general examination
  • Blood tests: blood group, hemoglobin (anemia), HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B
  • Urine test
  • An ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy and due date

At later visits

We check your blood pressure, the baby's growth and heartbeat, and ask about any symptoms. Around 24–28 weeks you may be tested for diabetes in pregnancy.

Iron, folic acid and tetanus protection

Most women are advised to take iron and folic acid tablets during pregnancy, and to be protected against tetanus. Your care team will tell you what you need.

Bring your card

Bring your antenatal card or any previous results to every visit. It helps every doctor who sees you.
